Tips to Improve Your Typing Speed
Master the Home Row
Keep your fingers on ASDF and JKL; - the home row position. Your index fingers should rest on the keys with small bumps (F and J).
Don't Look at the Keyboard
Touch typing is about muscle memory. Keep your eyes on the screen and trust your fingers to find the right keys.
Prioritize Accuracy Over Speed
Correcting mistakes costs time. Focus on typing correctly first, and speed will naturally follow with practice.
Practice Regularly
Consistency beats intensity. Just 15-20 minutes of daily practice can dramatically improve your typing speed within weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
The average typing speed is around 40 WPM. For most office jobs, 50-60 WPM is considered good. Professional typists, transcriptionists, and programmers often type at 70-100+ WPM. The world record is over 200 WPM!
WPM (Words Per Minute) is calculated by counting the total number of characters typed (including spaces) and dividing by 5 to get the number of "standard words." This is then divided by the number of minutes elapsed. We also factor in accuracy by only counting correctly typed characters.
WPM measures speed - how fast you type. Accuracy measures precision - what percentage of your keystrokes are correct. Both metrics are important. A high WPM with low accuracy means you're making many mistakes. Aim for at least 95% accuracy before focusing on increasing speed.
Most people can learn the basics of touch typing in 2-4 weeks with regular daily practice (15-30 minutes per day). Reaching professional speed (60+ WPM) typically takes 2-3 months of consistent practice. Try our free typing lessons to get started!
1-minute tests are great for quick assessments. 2-5 minute tests provide more accurate results as they account for stamina and consistency. 10-minute tests are closest to real-world typing scenarios and give the most reliable measurement of your sustained typing speed.
